Both are open-source ERPs with real manufacturing depth. They differ in licensing, shop floor tools and how far you can go without custom code.
ERPNext and Odoo both offer real manufacturing depth for UAE factories, covering BOMs, routings, work orders, material issue, scrap, subcontracting, quality checks and production costing. The better choice depends on production style, whether you prefer paying licences or customisation effort, and which shop floor interface your team finds easier. ERPNext uses job cards; Odoo offers tablet-based shop floor screens.
When a production manager in Sharjah or Dubai Industrial City asks about ERPNext vs Odoo for manufacturing UAE projects, the trigger is usually the same. Bills of materials sit in spreadsheets, the storekeeper issues raw material from memory, and nobody can say what a finished batch really cost until weeks after it ships. Both ERPNext and Odoo can fix that, and both come from an open-source base, which keeps them on the shortlist for budget-conscious manufacturers.
The general Odoo vs ERPNext comparison covers accounting, CRM and licensing at a high level. This page goes narrower: how each system handles the work between a sales order and a finished goods receipt. That means BOMs, routings, work orders, job cards, material issue, scrap, subcontracting, quality checks and production costing.
We implement both. We are an Odoo Official Partner and an ERPNext / Frappe partner, so we have no reason to push one over the other. Our view is that the right answer depends on your production style, how much you want to pay in licenses versus customization, and how comfortable your team is with each interface on the shop floor.

Odoo has a free Community edition and a paid Enterprise edition. Several manufacturing tools sit only in Enterprise, so the table notes that where it matters.
| ERPNext | Odoo | |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing | Fully open source (GPL); no per-user license fee; pay for hosting and services | Community is free; Enterprise is licensed per user and unlocks PLM, Quality, MPS and Shop Floor tools |
| Bill of materials | Multi-level BOMs with operations, scrap items and alternative items | Multi-level BoMs, kits, by-products and variant-based BoM lines |
| Routings and work centers | Workstations, operations and routings with hour rates | Work centers with capacity, efficiency and costing per hour |
| Shop floor execution | Job cards per operation with time logs and employee assignment | Work orders with tablet-friendly shop floor view (Enterprise) |
| Production planning | Production Plan pulls from sales orders and material requests | MRP scheduler with reordering rules; Master Production Schedule in Enterprise |
| Subcontracting | Subcontracting orders and receipts for outsourced operations | Subcontracting BoM type with automatic resupply of components |
| Quality | Quality Inspection templates on receipts, production and delivery | Quality control points, checks and alerts (Enterprise) |
| Engineering changes | BOM versioning; change control usually through workflow setup | PLM app with engineering change orders (Enterprise) |
| Batch and serial tracking | Batch and serial numbers with expiry and traceability reports | Lots and serial numbers with full upstream and downstream traceability |
| Production costing | Valuation via raw material cost plus operating cost on work orders | Real or standard costing with work center cost and analytic accounts |
| Customization approach | Low-code doctypes and server scripts on the Frappe framework | Studio (Enterprise) plus Python modules for deeper changes |
Features evolve with each release. We confirm the exact version and edition during discovery.
These six factors come up in nearly every manufacturing evaluation we run.
ERPNext carries no license fee, which appeals to factories with many shop floor users. Odoo Enterprise adds per-user fees but gives you finished tools such as Quality and PLM that you would otherwise configure or build.
Odoo's shop floor screens are designed for tablets at the work center, with large buttons and step instructions. ERPNext job cards are functional and clear but feel more like forms, which suits supervisors entering data on behalf of operators.
Food, chemical and cosmetics plants need batch yields, expiry and formula control. Both handle batches; ERPNext is often quicker to adapt for formula-style BOMs, while Odoo's lot traceability reports are more polished out of the box.
If customers audit your quality process, Odoo Enterprise Quality gives control points and alerts with little setup. ERPNext Quality Inspection covers incoming, in-process and outgoing checks and can be extended through ERPNext quality management.
Most factories need some changes, such as a custom costing sheet or a machine log. Frappe doctypes let ERPNext admins add these with less code. Odoo customization is powerful but usually needs a Python developer for anything beyond Studio.
Odoo has a larger app ecosystem for ecommerce, POS and field service. ERPNext keeps a tighter, integrated core. Think about what sits around production, not only production itself.
Use these scenarios as a quick filter before a detailed fit-gap workshop.
| Choose ERPNext if... | Choose Odoo if... | |
|---|---|---|
| Users | You have many shop floor or store users and want to avoid per-user license fees | Your user count is moderate and you value ready-made Enterprise apps |
| Production type | You run batch or formula production with yield and scrap tracking | You run discrete assembly with routings, kits and variants |
| Shop floor | Supervisors record output on job cards | Operators work from tablets at each work center |
| Quality and engineering | You need configurable inspections and are fine building change control in workflow | You want built-in PLM and quality control points |
| IT capacity | You have, or want to build, an in-house admin who can manage Frappe settings | You prefer a partner-managed system with a broad app store |
| Hosting | You want full control and self-host or use Frappe Cloud | You prefer Odoo Online or Odoo.sh managed hosting |
Manufacturers carry extra compliance load because of imports, exports and inventory valuation. Confirm tax treatment with your tax advisor.
Both systems can apply 5% VAT, reverse charge on imported goods declared through customs, and zero rating on qualifying exports. The tax codes and accounts must be mapped so the EmaraTax return boxes reconcile.
Corporate tax at 9% above AED 375,000 of taxable income depends on accurate profit. That means work-in-progress, scrap and finished goods valuation must be consistent month to month in either ERP.
Plants in JAFZA, SAIF Zone or KEZAD may qualify as Qualifying Free Zone Persons, subject to substance and de minimis conditions. The ERP should tag revenue by customer type and location so your advisor can assess qualifying income.

Ask an ExpertOdoo Community includes the core Manufacturing app with BoMs, work centers and manufacturing orders. Tools such as Quality, PLM, Master Production Schedule and the tablet shop floor view are Enterprise features. Many UAE factories start with a Community fit-gap and then decide whether Enterprise is worth it.
The software is open source with no per-user license. You still pay for hosting, implementation, customization and support. For factories with large user counts, that cost profile is often attractive, but budget for proper setup.
Both track batches, expiry dates and yields. ERPNext is often adapted faster for formula BOMs and batch-wise valuation. Odoo gives strong lot traceability reports. We usually test both against two or three of your real formulas before recommending one.
A focused single-plant rollout often takes 10-16 weeks, depending on BOM complexity, data quality and integration needs. Multi-plant or heavily customized projects take longer. We give a firmer range after discovery.
Yes, through APIs and middleware. Common links include weighbridges, label printers, barcode scanners and machine counters. Scope these early because they affect hardware choices on the floor.
