How do I upgrade my Odoo, ERPNext or Business Central system to a newer version in the UAE?

An ERP version upgrade in the UAE, such as Odoo 16 to Odoo 18, an ERPNext major release or Business Central release wave readiness, should be run as its own project. The work includes porting custom modules, checking third-party app compatibility, regression testing with real data and switching over in a controlled window, so reports and workflows still function afterwards.

  • Odoo ships a new major version roughly once a year and supports only recent versions.
  • Skipping several Odoo releases often forces a multi-step upgrade with more code to port.
  • Most upgrade effort goes into custom modules, print formats and automated actions, not the database.
  • A version upgrade differs from migrating to a new ERP product such as from Tally.

Why version upgrades need their own project

Our ERP upgrade services in the UAE take your current system to a newer version of the same platform: for example Odoo 16 to Odoo 18, an ERPNext move to a newer major release, or keeping Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central extensions ready for each release wave. The goal is simple: newer features and continued vendor support, with your data, customizations and reports still working afterwards.

Upgrades are often underestimated because the vendor tools make the database part look easy. The real effort is in everything around it. Custom modules written for the old version must be rewritten or adjusted, third-party apps need compatible releases, print formats may change, and automated actions can behave differently. That is where testing time goes.

This is not the same as changing ERP products. Moving from Tally or SAP Business One to a new platform is covered by our ERP migration services. Platform-specific upgrade notes are also on our Odoo migration and ERPNext migration pages.

Why version upgrades need their own project
  • Odoo major version upgrades, Enterprise and Community
  • ERPNext and Frappe framework version upgrades
  • Business Central release wave readiness and extension updates
  • Custom module porting, regression testing and controlled cut-over
The Challenge

What makes ERP upgrades risky

Each platform upgrades differently, but the same risks show up on most projects.

Odoo's yearly release cycle

Odoo ships a new major version roughly once a year and supports only recent versions. Companies that skip several releases face a multi-step upgrade and much more code to port at once.

Custom code written for one version

Odoo and ERPNext customizations depend on internal models and APIs that change between versions. Modules that installed cleanly before can fail or, worse, run with subtle errors.

Business Central release waves

Business Central online receives two major release waves a year plus regular minor updates. Per-tenant extensions that use deprecated features must be updated before the update window closes.

Third-party apps without a new release

An app from the Odoo store or a community module may not yet exist for the target version. You need to know this before committing to a go-live date.

Reports and print formats change

Tax invoice layouts, statements and custom reports often need rework after an upgrade. Missing TRN or Arabic text on a tax invoice is a compliance problem, not a cosmetic one.

Users notice changed screens

Menus, buttons and workflows move between versions. Without short refresher sessions, productivity drops in the first weeks after the upgrade.

How It Works

Our ERP upgrade process

We test on a copy of your live database before production is touched.

01

Impact analysis

We list every installed module, custom module, third-party app, integration and custom report, then check what changes in the target version and what must be ported or replaced.

02

Upgrade plan and target version

We recommend which version to move to and whether the path needs intermediate steps. You receive an effort estimate split between database upgrade, code porting and testing.

03

Test upgrade and code porting

A copy of production is upgraded using the platform's tools, such as Odoo's upgrade service for Enterprise or OpenUpgrade for Community, or bench migrate for ERPNext. Custom modules are ported and installed.

04

Regression testing with your users

Key users run a script covering sales, purchasing, stock, accounting, VAT reports and integrations. Issues are fixed and the test upgrade is repeated until results match.

05

Production upgrade and support

We freeze transactions, back up, run the final upgrade in an agreed window, run smoke tests and stay close to users during the first days back at work.

Deliverables from an upgrade project

You should end the project with more than a newer version number.

  • Upgrade impact report covering modules, apps, integrations and reports
  • Recommended target version and upgrade path
  • Ported custom modules in version control for the new release
  • Replacement plan for any third-party app without a compatible version
  • Regression test script with signed-off results
  • Updated tax invoice and document templates checked for UAE VAT fields
  • Rollback plan and pre-upgrade backup
  • Short what-changed guide and refresher session for users
Implementation Timeline

Typical upgrade timeline

Effort depends mostly on the amount of custom code and how many versions you are jumping. These ranges are indicative only.

Durations are typical ranges; your plan is agreed after discovery.

  1. Impact analysis

    1-2 weeks

Inventory of modules, code and integrations, and the upgrade path decision.

  2. Test upgrade and porting

    2-6 weeks

Database upgrade on a copy and porting of custom modules; longer for multi-version jumps.

  3. User testing

    1-3 weeks

Regression testing, fixes and repeat test upgrades until sign-off.

  4. Go-live

    1-3 days

Final upgrade in a planned window, often over a weekend, followed by smoke tests.

  5. Hypercare

    1-2 weeks

Close support for users and quick fixes for anything missed in testing.

Business Benefits

What a well-run upgrade gives you

The benefits show up in stability, security and in how easy the next upgrade will be.

Continued vendor support

Staying on a supported version means you keep receiving security fixes and functional updates from the platform.

Access to newer features

New releases bring improvements in areas such as accounting, inventory and reporting that you can adopt in a planned way.

Cleaner custom code

Porting is a chance to remove customizations that the new version now covers as standard, reducing future maintenance.

Easier next upgrade

With code in version control and a reusable test script, the following upgrade starts from a much better position.

FAQs

ERP upgrade services: common questions

Still have a question? Our consultants are happy to help.

Ask an Expert
How often should we upgrade Odoo?

Many companies upgrade every one to two major versions so they stay within Odoo's supported range without upgrading every year. Skipping too many versions makes the eventual upgrade larger and riskier.

Does Zoho need version upgrades?

No. Zoho is SaaS and Zoho updates the software for all customers. What changes for Zoho users is usually a plan or edition change, plus reviewing custom functions and integrations when Zoho releases new features.

Who handles Business Central updates?

For Business Central online, Microsoft delivers the updates. Your partner's job is to keep per-tenant extensions compatible, test in a sandbox before the update window, and schedule the update at a suitable time in the admin center.

Can we upgrade Odoo Community the same way as Enterprise?

Not exactly. Odoo's own upgrade service is for Enterprise databases. Community upgrades usually rely on the OpenUpgrade project and more manual work, which should be reflected in the estimate.

Will our data be safe during the upgrade?

All work is done on a copy first, and production is backed up immediately before the final upgrade. If anything fails during go-live, the rollback plan restores the previous version.
