What should an ERP for a plastic manufacturing company in the UAE handle?

An ERP for plastic manufacturing in the UAE should record resin, masterbatch and additive usage by machine and job, track molds with cavities, cycle times and shot counts, schedule machine capacity, and capture scrap and regrind as real inventory. Odoo, ERPNext, Dynamics 365 and Zoho can support injection molders, blow molders, film extruders and pipe makers with shop-floor data capture and costing.

  • Mold shot counters can trigger a maintenance request when a usage threshold is reached.
  • Regrind is booked as its own item and consumed on the BoM like virgin resin.
  • Operators can record good and rejected quantities and downtime reasons on tablet job card screens.
  • Resin is usually the largest cost in UAE plastic plants, and machine capacity the main constraint.

Plastic factories run on material yield and machine time

An ERP for plastic manufacturing in the UAE must answer two questions every shift: how much polymer did we use for the good parts we made, and how many hours did each machine actually run? Whether you mold caps and closures in Sharjah, blow PET bottles in Ajman, extrude film in Umm Al Quwain or make pipes in Ras Al Khaimah, resin is usually the largest cost and machine capacity is the main constraint.

Plastic plants also carry a large tooling investment. Each mold has a cavity count, a cycle time and a maintenance schedule based on shots, and a damaged mold can stop an entire product line. Customers in food packaging, construction, healthcare and FMCG expect consistent weights and colours, and they change orders often.

We implement Odoo, ERPNext, Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Zoho for UAE manufacturers. This page explains how an ERP for plastics should handle resin and masterbatch, regrind, molds, machine scheduling, scrap and costing. Packaging converters who print and laminate will also find our ERP for packaging companies page useful.

The Challenge

Typical problems in UAE plastic plants

These challenges come up in almost every plastics factory we assess.

Resin usage that does not match output

Bags of polymer are issued to the floor in bulk, so nobody knows which job consumed them. When part weights creep up or start-up scrap is high, the extra resin is invisible until stock count.

Regrind that disappears from the books

Runners, sprues and rejected parts are ground and fed back into production. If regrind is not recorded as stock with a value, material costs are overstated on some jobs and understated on others.

Mold maintenance done too late

Molds are serviced only when they break, because shot counts are kept on paper or not at all. Unplanned mold repairs cause missed delivery dates and expensive rush machining.

Machine schedules on a whiteboard

Planners juggle colour changes, mold changes and urgent orders on a board. Sales cannot give reliable delivery dates because they cannot see machine load.

Cost per piece based on old assumptions

Quotes use a cycle time and part weight set years ago. Without actual run data, the business may be quoting jobs that lose money at current resin prices.

Recommended Modules

Recommended ERP modules for plastic manufacturers

The following modules cover the needs of most molding and extrusion operations.

Bills of materials with weights

Part weight, runner weight, masterbatch ratio and packing materials per product, used for planning and costing.

Work centers and routings

Machines set up as work centers with tonnage or line speed, hourly cost and standard cycle times per mold.

Production scheduling

Order sequencing by machine, mold availability and colour to reduce changeover time.

Mold and tooling management

Molds tracked as assets with location, cavities, shot counter and preventive maintenance triggers.

Shop-floor data capture

Operators record output, rejects and downtime reasons by shift on a tablet or terminal.

Scrap and regrind inventory

Scrap and regrind posted to their own items and locations so they can be reused or sold with correct values.

Quality inspection

First-off approval, weight and dimension checks and colour checks stored against the production order.

Costing and quoting

Actual cost per piece from resin, machine hours and labour, used to review prices and new quotes.

Dashboard Preview

A production dashboard built around machines

Plant managers in plastics care about machine availability, scrap and resin usage more than anything else. This view puts them side by side.

  • Machine status and load for the next shifts
  • Output versus plan per machine and mold
  • Scrap and regrind generated by job
  • Resin used against BoM standard
  • Molds due for preventive maintenance by shot count

Which platform suits which plastics company

Plant size, number of machines and how far you want to go with shop-floor data capture all influence the choice.

We implement Zoho, Odoo, ERPNext, Dynamics 365 and custom ERP. Zoho suits trading-heavy plastic businesses better than multi-machine factories.

UAE Compliance

UAE compliance notes for plastic manufacturers

Plastics businesses face product rules as well as tax rules. The ERP should make the right data easy to report. Confirm specific obligations with your advisors.

Single-use plastic restrictions

Several emirates and the federal government have phased in restrictions on certain single-use plastic products. Keeping product classification and material type on each item helps sales and production see which products are affected as rules change. Check current regulations for your products.

VAT on local sales and exports

Local sales carry 5% VAT on a tax invoice with your TRN, and exports may be zero-rated where documentary conditions are met. The ERP should link export invoices to shipping evidence for the VAT return filed through EmaraTax. Confirm treatment with your tax advisor.

E-invoicing readiness

Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more must issue e-invoices through an Accredited Service Provider from 1 January 2027, and others from 1 July 2027, using the PINT AE specification. Check the latest Ministry of Finance and FTA guidance before planning cut-over.

WPS payroll for shift teams

Operators often work rotating shifts with overtime. Payroll in the ERP can calculate overtime and gratuity under UAE Labour Law and produce the Salary Information File for WPS payment through your bank or agent.

General information, not tax or legal advice. Rules change; confirm current FTA, MOHRE and Ministry of Finance guidance with your advisor.

Business Benefits

What plastics manufacturers usually improve

These are the typical outcomes, not guarantees; your baseline and data discipline matter.

Clear resin variance

Actual usage against the BoM shows which jobs, molds or machines consume more polymer than they should.

Fewer mold breakdowns

Shot-count based maintenance brings molds in for service before they fail on a running job.

Better delivery promises

Sales can see machine load and give dates the plant can meet.

Quotes based on real costs

Actual cycle times and weights feed new quotes, protecting margin when resin prices move.

FAQs

Plastic manufacturing ERP questions

Still have a question? Our consultants are happy to help.

Ask an Expert
Can the ERP track mold shot counts?

Yes. Molds can be set up as equipment or assets with a counter that increases with production output multiplied by cavities. When the count reaches a threshold, a maintenance request is created. Odoo and ERPNext handle this with standard maintenance features plus light configuration.

How is regrind handled in costing?

Regrind is booked as its own item when scrap is ground, at a value you define. When it is mixed back into production, it is consumed on the BoM like virgin resin, so job costs reflect the real material mix.

Can operators enter output on the shop floor?

Yes. Most platforms offer a shop-floor or job card screen for tablets. Operators start and stop jobs, record good and rejected quantities and select downtime reasons, which feeds the production dashboard.

Can we connect injection molding machines directly?

It is possible through machine counters, IoT gateways or a middleware layer that posts output to the ERP's API. We usually start with manual shift entry, then automate the busiest machines once the data model is proven.

Is Zoho suitable for a plastics factory?

Zoho Inventory supports assemblies and batch tracking, but it is not a full manufacturing system with work centers and scheduling. It can suit a business that trades plastics and does simple assembly. Multi-machine plants are usually better served by Odoo, ERPNext or Dynamics 365.

Do you provide on-site support in the northern emirates?

Yes. Our office is in Dubai, and we support plants in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah on-site and remotely during implementation and after go-live.
